| Hansen: Iowa conservationist is cool to global warming theories
Ptolemy, the zany Greek who said the Earth was the center of the universe, had them fooled for 1,500 years. Then Copernicus came along and said hold on a minute. I doubt the politicians were handing out anti-Ptolemy literature back then - the church wouldn't allow it - but sometimes the scientific consensus does turn out to be wrong. That's why I refuse to ridicule the five Iowa legislators who were touting a book last week that said human activity has nothing to do with global warming. .
FLASHPOINT: West Vigo center’s work has brought great improvements
On behalf of the West Vigo Community Center, I would like to thank those who have made positive change possible during the last six months at the center. Under the guidance of Interim Executive Director Teresa Herrington, new Learning Center Director Debbie Stout, a new board of directors, and many volunteers, the center is truly experiencing a "new beginning."These are some of those responsible:Danny Wayne of Midwest Communications radio and WTWO NewsChannel 2 Morning Edition advertised our Fall Fish Feast at the Grotto. Over 550 people arrived with their appetites and were not disappointed.Channel 2 also publicized activities at the center and raised community awareness about the plight surrounding our recent Children's Christmas Party. After the coverage, many people opened their hearts and their checkbooks to help provide gifts and pictures with Santa for over 250 children. The Salvation Army came to our rescue with age-appropriate toys for the children.
New year, new look and attitude for the home
Rick Brightly's bedroom was stuffed with college dorm furniture and his love life was stalled when he got a makeover from HGTV's "Fun Shui." He traded his décor in South Brunswick, N.J., for a more sophisticated, minimal and uncluttered feel. Brightly says since then, even his love life has picked up — although he doesn't attribute it to any hocus-pocus. "If you're excited about the place where you spend a lot of time, you portray yourself differently, and people react differently to you when you're out in the world," Brightly says. The basic principles of feng shui include placing strategic representations of five natural elements around your room — earth, water, fire, metal and wood. Modern feng shui divides your room or home into a grid of nine equal areas, called a bagua map.
Extra! UIdaho Student Found Shot to Death
Even what little projects are left will REQUIRE tax increases in the future. The Idaho Transporation Department has been gutted. Idaho's entire transportation system has been uprooted and set back years because of this disaster known as GARVEE. What the Legislature should do tomorrow is tell Idaho they made a mistake 2 years ago that has cost too much. They need to gut it completely and ask Governor Otter and ITD to spend the next few months getting things back on track, making transporation the issue of 2008. Meanwhile, the "consultants" who were the beneficiaries of these so-called GARVEE bonds (the people got nothing--NOTHING--from this deal, even though millions have been spent!) can go back to the drawing table. Shame on the Legislature 2 years ago for letting this thing happen when they were put into a corner by our then governor at the last minute, without sufficient information! It was such a scam! Shame on them.
