Gazans Feeling Recoil of Attacks on Israel

When the fighters came one morning last month, the Wahdan family pleaded with them to think of the Israeli return fire that the rockets often drew. "There are women in the house, there are children," Wahdan recalled telling them. "You run away, but if the Israeli planes come, where do we go?"

But the gunmen went on as planned, the Wahdan family said. When the fighters came back that afternoon to launch rockets that had failed to fire the first time, Khadra, Mohammed's 54-year-old mother, was rolling dough in the kitchen. She ran out to shout at the fighters.

Khadra made it to the gate of the family courtyard when an Israeli shell hit. Shrapnel killed her and the family's 15-year-old hired farmhand.

"Her last words were, 'Go away,' " Mohammed Wahdan said.

2nd Slaughterhouse Worker Arrested In Recall Case

A second fired worker has been arrested in a case involving alleged abuses at a Chino slaughterhouse that led to the nation's largest beef recall.

Luis Sanchez surrendered to Chino police Wednesday and pleaded not guilty Thursday to three misdemeanors involving the illegal movement of sick or injured cattle.

Prosecutors say he remains in custody in lieu of $15,000 bail and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing next week.

An arrest warrant was issued Friday for Sanchez and his Westland/Hallmark Meat Company co-worker Daniel Ugarte Navarro.

Navarro was taken into custody previously and released on bail. He faces five felony counts of animal abuse in addition to three misdemeanors.

We all know game-day curses aren't real. But just in case...

Sports and superstitions go together like black cats and bad luck. Tonight, perfection is on the line, and the New England Patriots must defeat the New York Giants to become only the second undefeated team in NFL history. There’s no doubt that sports superstitions are a major part of the American psyche. According to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released last year, one in five sports fans say they try to do things to bring good luck to their favorite team or avoid jinxing them. Since history could be in the making tonight, players and fans will likely be searching for any edge they can get to win. Sometimes, that means turning to superstitions. Covers Boding well for both teams is the fact neither a Patriot nor a Giant appears on the cover of this year’s Madden NFL.

The Winchester Star

Winchester — A Winchester man convicted of killing a city police officer plans to appeal the decision that the U.S. Court of Appeals made last month to uphold his death sentence.

Edward Nathaniel Bell, 42, is asking the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to put its decision on hold while he petitions the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his case.

On Jan. 29, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Richmond denied Bell’s petition for a panel rehearing.

Bell, who was appealing his death sentence for the Oct. 29, 1999, capital murder of Winchester Police Sgt. Rick L. Timbrook, was asking the court to reconsider its Dec. 4 decision that he was not entitled to a new sentencing hearing.

Bell’s attorneys had argued before a three-judge Court of Appeals panel on Oct.
