Tax amendment's unknowns shouldn't put schools at a loss
There's a lot I don't understand about the property tax amendment that Florida voters approved 64-36 percent last week.
Like how did Gov. Charlie Crist go around promoting it as a tax cut while preparing a state budget that forces school districts to raise the their portion of local property taxes? Is this going to be the same type of empty shell game that occurred last year with hurricane insurance "relief"?
And what happens if you buy a house next week counting on the portability of Save Our Homes benefits and then a court declares the new system unconstitutional? Will you get grandfathered into the new system? Or will you have to cough up thousands more than you figured in annual taxes?

Group aims for HVAC ‘yes’
Collecting donations, running ads and gathering new members along the way, Care For Kids continues to mount an organized effort to get the schools $3.35 million bond referendum approved for air conditioning and other improvements.
Meeting Wednesday, group members expressed concern not only for lack of A/C, but reports from teachers that the heating system at Hoover Elementary leaves some rooms still cold while teachers in others prop open windows to cool off.
We need to focus on the heat part of it, member Jeni Schiele said.
The group is organizing a petition drive to get a satellite voting booth set up at the March 7 elementary school carnival in hopes of pulling in more voters.
The group plans to meet with an architect Feb.
Fire victims prepare to rebuild lives
City fire investigators were still searching for the cause of the fire yesterday, and had not ruled out the possibility that it was set, a fire department spokesman said. Investigators also continued to probe the source of another fire that killed two people in South Boston on New Year's Eve. Yesterday, former residents of the Emerson Street condominium complex were allowed back in the towering brick structure for the first time since they fled the smoky blaze with little more than the clothes they were wearing. The two fires left 50 people homeless, 30 in South Boston and 20 in Hyde Park's Logan Square section, and caused a combined estimated $6.5 million in damages, $5 million in South Boston and $1.5 million in Hyde Park, officials said. The Hyde Park fire destroyed or damaged eight businesses in a landmark, three-story building on River Street, across from the Hyde Park municipal building.

Gathered in a front room of a Kenner home Monday night, Johnson's family said he was diagnosed with the illness when he was 19. With tears welling, Johnson's brother Timothy Johnson expressed his condolences to Cotton's family. "I'm sorry her life was brought to such an abrupt end serving the community," he said. Riley said the shooting cast a pall of grief over the New Orleans Police Department. "It is extremely difficult. I just left a group of officers who are crying, who are upset," Riley said. "My message to the officers: We have citizens to serve. We have a very, very, very dangerous job. We have to do all that we can to keep our citizens safe, as well as ourselves." It is unclear what prompted Cotton to question Johnson in the parking lot shared by a urban wear store, a Chinese food store and a laundry.
