Central Air Conditioning Trouble Shooting How Central Air Conditioning Works
Ridges, soffits can effectively draw air

Q: I need help making a decision. We own a 30-year-old house with a low-pitch roof. We replaced the roof about four years ago, added a ridge vent and put an extra soffit vent between each original soffit vent. Other than the ridge vent and the gable vents, there is not another venting system.

My question is (and I hope that I can explain it easily) — would more air be drawn up through the soffit vents to the ridge vent if the gable vents were closed off? It seems that the majority of the air being pulled through the ridge vent would be from the gable vents, since the ridge vent is higher. I hope this makes sense.

Revolution in the power lines

A QUIET revolution in the way the nation plans for its future electricity needs took place in Holyoke earlier this month, when the operator of the region's power grid held an auction for the cheapest ways to meet demand until 2011. The big winner was conservation.

The recent auction by the nonprofit Independent System Operator New England was the first in the country in which bidders could propose ways to cut demand and increase efficiency, instead of just increasing supply.

The auction proved that it can be cheaper for a system to arrange, for instance, for big power users to ease off the air-conditioning on the hottest days than for the system to look to other options, such as the construction of new peak-power plants that burn costly natural gas.

Looking ahead to 2010 and 2011, the ISO had decided it needed about 1,800 new megawatts of capacity - enough to power about 1.3 million homes.

Video Reveals Violations of Laws, Abuse of Cows at Slaughterhouse

I contend that advocates of violence against animals (i.e., meat-eaters) pre-disposes such people for advocating violence against people. Yes, meat-eaters will swear blue that they are peaceniks, but that is just lip service.

Eliminate the slaughter of animals for consumption (and product-tesing etc), you go a loooong way to eliminating the need for war and violence against people.

Businesses left sweltering, paying big for copper thefts

On the roof of a strip mall near Hollenbeck Street and the 10 Freeway, burglars stripped six air conditioners of their copper coils in recent weeks. Then they returned to pull apart three more.

Although the thieves may have made about $900 for two nights' work, businesses like World Gym, Dental Fun Zone and several others were left sweltering - and facing an estimated $100,000 in damage, said one expert called in by police.

"We have a rash of copper thefts - and not just in our city," said Cpl. Rudy Lopez.

Thefts of copper, aluminum and other metals have increased in recent years as their value has soared, but their worth to the burglars is far less than the damage done to the victims, authorities said.

The nighttime game lights are dead at Little League fields in Montclair and Hacienda Heights because of copper stolen in the past two weeks.
