It's here that the latest in bleeding-edge technology, gadgets and software gets its public coming-out party, spread across a mind-blowing 167,000 sq. metres of exhibit space in two massive convention centres. And what a party it is. Seeing everything that's on display at CES is nigh-on impossible, even over the show's four days. Still, we got to witness some pretty cool stuff before CES wrapped up yesterday, and it's too much to cram into just one gadgets page. So here's Part One of our roundup of some of the niftiest, craziest and otherwise memorable technology straight outta Vegas. Extracurricular activities not included. --- MICROSOFT SURFACE This wasn't the first time Microsoft's upcoming tabletop display technology was shown to the public, but it was definitely the first time we saw just how amazing Surface might be when it starts to arrive this year in hotels, retail stores and the like.
Johnson Controls Acquires Skymark International
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE: JCI) , the global, multi-industrial leader in creating smart environments, today announced that it has acquired Skymark International, Inc. an indoor packaged HVAC products manufacturer headquartered in Ontario Canada. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Skymark designs and manufactures indoor, through-the-wall and self-contained packaged HVAC products used in new, retrofit and renovation projects throughout North America. "Skymark brings an enhanced and expanded HVAC/R product line to Johnson Controls, allowing us to better serve our customers' needs," said Allen Martin, Johnson Controls vice president and general manager for Systems business in North America, Latin America, & the Middle East.
Freon leak prompts evacuation of Bell Helicopter plant
Hundreds of Bell Helicopter employees evacuated the engineering building in Hurst on Monday after an air-conditioning system component sprung a freon leak. About 500 pounds of R-22 refrigerant, an odorless, colorless and nontoxic gas, was released. Bell spokesman Mike Cox said the evacuation was orderly and no employees were injured. -- Bob Cox Internet traffic restored on two cut undersea cables CAIRO, Egypt -- Traffic has returned to normal on two undersea Internet cables in the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf, cable owner FLAG Telecom said Monday. The cables were cut last month, causing disruptions across the Middle East and parts of Asia. But the fate of a third cut cable, off Alexandria, Egypt, was still unknown. -- The Associated Press Continental employees to receive $158 million in profit sharing HOUSTON -- Continental Airlines said Monday it will pay a record $158 million in profit sharing Thursday to employees, based on the carrier's 2007 results.

I continue to be amazed at the evolvement of Huckleberries Online and the local blog community. HBO Blogfest '08 is another example of something happenin' different here. A wonderful mix of personalities and pseudonyms. It didn't start out that way. But I'm delighted that we've gotten to a place where we can set aside ideologies, religious doctrine, politics, disparate backgrounds, etc., to enjoy one another's company. Blogfest '08 was a special time. I'd like to see HBO and the SR sponsor a Dougfest (Doug Clark & Trailer Park Girls) this summer. It might happen. Who knows? HBO works because there's no agenda or much organization. Sorta like the Grateful Dead. If I don't screw things up at HBO Central, we'll get together for another blogfest about this time next year.
