| Tension lingers at Marble Rock Council session
But Merfeld later drew up a second agenda and hand-delivered it to council members Sunday in addition to posting it at City Hall. That agenda included some of the same items that were on the first agenda but did not include appointment of a city attorney as the first agenda did.At the beginning of the meeting, Merfeld read a statement to the council."I will not consider any appointment for city attorney until all of the members of the City Council and the citizens of Marble Rock have been fully informed concerning the possible appointees, such as hourly fees, travel expense, availability for meetings, retainer fees, experience and more," he said.Merfeld also said he was not going to ask for approval of the agenda for that night but proceed directly into the meeting."There will be no prior comments allowed by any of the members of the City Council as they will more than likely result in the city’s urgent business not being addressed," he said."You can’t just sit there on your bully pulpit and dictate to us," Handley said.Engelhardt, Wells and Handley voted to approve the first agenda that was posted.
Cathedral's renovation could take 3 years, cost $15M
Sioux Falls Diocese Bishop Paul Swain wants to restore the beauty of St. Joseph Cathedral through a $15 million renovation project that could begin this year. Swain laid out preliminary plans for the project before members and nuns Monday night in the cathedral's church hall. The renovation would do more than put paint on the walls, he said. It would create an atmosphere that would bring more people to the church and help spread the word of God. "We'll have some opportunities to invite others in," he said. "I'm not going to be satisfied if all we do is restore a beautiful place. ... I'm hopeful that we also enliven this place in a new way." Swain said the project could take three years. He emphasized being respectful of what members have inherited and doing the project right.
Bradley County Churches Get Extra Protection Due To Thefts
Sheriff Tim Gobble has placed rural Bradley County churches on "extra patrol" after recent thefts of outside heating/air conditioning units in the area. The order means patrol deputies will make regular checks of those located in the patrol zone they are covering. In recent weeks there have been thefts from at least six churches in Bradley and surrounding counties. Inside the units the thieves are able to extract copper tubing they can sell as scrap metal. Each theft brings a loss of at least $1,000, and in some cases the value of the unit is in the thousands of dollars. Sheriff Gobble is asking the public to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to not hesitate to call 9-1-1 if you see something out of the ordinary, especially on days and at times when services are not held.
Tata Motors rolls out Nano, the world's cheapest car
India's Tata Motors on Thursday unveiled its much anticipated $2,500 US car, an ultra-cheap price tag that brings car ownership into the reach of tens of millions of people. Members of the media look at a newly launched Tata Nano car at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi on Thursday. The ultracheap car — $2,500 US — suddenly brings car ownership into the reach of tens of millions of people around the world. (Saurabh Das/Associated Press) But critics worry the car could overwhelm the country's roads and create an environmental nightmare. Company chairman Ratan Tata, introducing the Nano during India's main auto show, drove onto a stage in a white version of the tiny four-door subcompact, his head nearly touching the roof. With a snub nose and a sloping roof, the world's cheapest car can fit five people — if they squeeze.
COLUMN: Norman PD slow to react to car wreck
They aren't out to get you and all college kids. They are dealing with real emergencies on top of unimportant calls...not to mention they are under staffed. So, be courteous to the old man having a stroke, the young woman bleeding internally, or the 5 year old who hit her head while playing and has a head bleed and may never make it to 6... because when you call an ambulance for non-injury and non-emergency incidents, you take away an ambulance and medics that could save their lives. So with all do respect, stop pouting. Be thankful that there are men and women who can, will, and did respond. Scott M. Sauer - 02/21/08 10:41am Thats not the point. the point is that it took them 30 minutes to respond to an accident. Them being understaffed is not an excuse. that's not my problem.
