Hominy warms to Mexican cuisine

On a hot Sunday afternoon toward the end of summer, a Jeep SUV was parked on Main Street with the doors unlocked and the engine running.

In Tulsa, you'd be kind of brave -- or maybe kind of dumb -- to leave your keys in the ignition. But in Hominy, Alex Galvan and her father don't think twice about walking down the street for a snow cone to give the air conditioner time to work.

"Crime?" her father says. "In Hominy? Don't worry about it."

Javier Galvan used to run an authentic Mexican restaurant in east Tulsa, where he attracted loyal customers and earned a positive review from the World's food critic. But crime was a constant worry.

"Stealing. Shooting. Robbing," he says. "Too much goes on there."

A year and a half ago, when he heard about an old burger joint going out of business in downtown Hominy, Javier jumped in his Jeep to have a look around.

For Carmakers, High Performance Equals High Profit

In March, Lexus is launching a high-performance division. Called the F—for "Flagship"—the first model will be the sporty, $56,765 Lexus IS F. Several more F models are in the pipeline, including a luxury sedan and an SUV-wagon crossover.

This represents a radical departure for Lexus, which has enjoyed enormous success as Toyota's (TM) luxury brand, despite being often faulted by driving enthusiasts for making cars that are unexciting, albeit attractive, well-built, and competitively priced. Now obviously Toyota's top brass wants to change this impression—and that is something that should concern executives at the high-performance divisions of its luxury rivals, specifically Mercedes-Benz (DAI), BMW (BMWG), and, increasingly, Audi (NSUG).

Mercedes offers an AMG version of nearly every model it sells, including light trucks.

Lawn to Farm: Suburbia’s Silver Lining

I look at the empty countryside around our farm and can't help but wish it were as thick with people as when my grandparents made a living here. Until recently, though, the kindest name the rest of the world had for this wish was "nostalgia."

Back then, leaving the farm made sense. The economy was growing on an energy-dense broth of cheap fossil fuels. The energy in those fuels replaced that from the muscles of farm people and their animals. Today one person can grow food for more than a hundred.

A century ago, almost 40 percent of the United States population worked on farms. But with industrialization, millions of farm folk, their labor cheapened, headed to the city for better wages. That tide continued until fewer than 2 million farmers — less than 1 percent of the country's population — remain today.

Board approves service plan for HVAC system

The Forrest City School Board on Monday agreed to enter into a contract with a local company to try and ensure that the new HVAC system at the high school works properly.

Following some discussion on the matter, the districts board agreed unanimously to a one-year maintenance contract with Store Services Inc., of Forrest City for a base price of $6,480. The contract requires SSI to perform quarterly maintenance on the system. Board member Ernestine Weaver was absent. The other bidder was Mohr Heating and Air Conditioning of Wynne.

Architect Dave Hodges, who works with the school district on the HVAC system, explained to the board that a separate maintenance contract, in his opinion, would benefit the district.

Basically, you would hire someone to get really familiar with the system and to check quarterly to make sure everything is working properly, said Hodges.
