Bonds for libraries, 'COPs' for police building

Barton said when he first began considering COPs he too was "reluctant and hesitant and quite doubtful."

But the public safety building just doesn't have the support, Barton said. He said his son, home from college, didn't know where the police department is, at 275 Forest Ave., while he "knew where all the libraries are."

But the city will have to work hard to find the money to pay for the project, Barton said. Staff estimates the building's cost will climb by about $500,000 for each month of delay after April 2009, based on the $69 million estimate and a 10 percent increase in building materials the city has experienced over the past two years.

"The key is to get us moving down the road and getting this building built," Barton said.

The COPs would be issued in April 2009, when construction is slated to begin.

Calling all superstitious Giants fans

We're at the stadium for home games, and we've determined which tailgate foods are lucky and unlucky. Stuffed peppers (or shooters, as some call them) have been banned from the tailgate after too many losses. And even though we've got four, my old man and I have also been sitting in the same exact seats at Giants stadium for the past 25 years. We never switch it up, ever.

A full house for HomeFront

The nonprofit began in 1990 when executive director Connie Mercer was informed of the many homeless families living out of motel rooms in the area. She and several friends began preparing hot meals for them, as well as providing recreation for children and transportation for adults to doctor’s appointments and job training. The organization officially became known as HomeFront in 1998. Laura Trzasko, development assistant for HomeFront, came up with the idea of merging poker with charity. "I really wanted to plan an event," says the 22-year-old Plainsboro resident, who joined HomeFront six months ago. "Poker is very popular right now," Ms. Trzasko says. "I feel like you can’t miss it when it’s always on ESPN." .

New and improved FireSky Resort a solid Scottsdale golf trip ...

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Bad hotels don't tend to last in this trendy desert town that only seems to grow in popularity every year. Especially bad high-end hotels with room rates that would make a grandmother from Iowa faint.

There is just too much competition for luxury travelers. With the Phoenix-Scottsdale resort corridor seeing a virtual arms race of resort renovations, a hotel with something lacking to begin with holds little chance of survival.

It's probably no surprise then that the Caleo Resort & Spa found itself bought out by Kimpton Hotels and renamed and revamped as the FireSky Resort almost two years ago. If you had bad experiences at Caleo, it's time to put those to rest.

For a visit to the FireSky Resort offers up a dramatically different vibe.

HEAVENLY HOMES: Old church priory becomes affordable apartments

For nearly a century, Dominican friars made their home in the former St. Anne's Church priory at 818 Middle St. Today, the historic granite and marble three-story residence is about to be reborn as St. Dominic's Apartments, an affordable housing complex for the over-62 set. St. Dominic's, named for the friars who lived there, will have 18 one-bedroom apartments for seniors who meet eligibility requirements outlined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Four units are handicapped accessible. Tenants will pay no more than 30 percent of their income in rent, and heat and hot water are included. "It's for singles and couples," said Ed Allard, project manager for Community Action for Better Housing, which is co-sponsoring the project with Catholic Social Services. Construction on the building began a year ago and has been substantial, costing $4.5 million.
